Year 7 Catch Up Premium

Reading

Many of the pupils who arrive at the Braybrook Centre are below their expected reading age.  To help pupils catch up we use Accelerated Reader for all pupils.

Accelerated Reader gives teachers the information they need to monitor students’ reading practice and make informed decisions to guide their future learning.

A comprehensive set of reports reveals how much a student has been reading, at what level of complexity, and how well they have understood what they have read. Vocabulary growth and literacy skills are also measured, giving teachers insight into how well students have responded to reading schemes and class instruction.

Literacy / Numeracy Interventions

All pupils at the Braybrook Centre complete a baseline assessment which is used, along with prior assessments data and Key Stage 2 validated data is used to set individual targets.  If any pupil is below their age related expectation for literacy or numeracy then they receive one to one interventions once or twice a week in addition to their curriculum lessons.

Catch-Up Premium is integral to both the Accelerated Reader and Accelerated Maths Intervention Programmes. This year we have utilised the additional grant to not only purchase the Accelerated Maths programme but also to purchase £500 of new reading books to support the Accelerated Reader programme.

Both programmes are having very positive rewards for our students so far.

The Accelerated Reader programme provides teachers with the information they need to both monitor students reading skills and to also plan suitable and accessible learning materials to accelerate every student’s progress across all areas of the curriculum.

The Accelerated Maths programme is a similar learning package for Mathematics which identifies for every student their individual areas of strength and those areas which require further consolidation. Consequently, bespoke learning programmes can be devised for each student. These serve to help every student to improve their basic skills and wider mathematical concepts. In addition the programme also helps to prepare students for both their later years of education and their everyday lives.
